The rejection email arrives, and buried below the standard language is an offer: the journal thinks your manuscript might be a good fit for another title in their portfolio, and they can transfer everything over automatically. Most authors who have submitted to Nature, Lancet, JAMA, or the journals published by Elsevier, Springer Nature, and Wiley have seen this message. For a long time, the calculation was simple. If the receiving journal looked credible and the transfer was free, you clicked accept and saved a few hours of re-formatting.

It also signals that the authors have engaged actively with feedback, which reviewers at the receiving journal will appreciate if they see the prior reports.

What the Transfer Decision Actually Reflects

Cascade offers have become common enough that receiving one is not a judgment on your paper's quality. High-rejection journals like NEJM, The Lancet, and JAMA decline the majority of submissions, including many that are published elsewhere with significant impact. The cascade offer from those journals reflects a policy decision about fit and volume, not necessarily a statement about the scientific merit of your work.

That said, the decision you make after receiving the offer does reflect on your submission strategy. Authors who transfer without reviewing the receiving journal, without checking their APC situation, and without revising their cover letter are making a passive choice in a process that rewards active evaluation. The time saved by not re-uploading files is roughly fifteen to sixty minutes. The consequences of publishing in a journal that does not reach your intended audience, or that requires an APC your institution cannot support, extend well beyond a single afternoon.

In 2026, with funders actively restricting how open access publishing can be funded, this evaluation is more consequential than it was two or three years ago. The systems publishers built to make transfers frictionless have not kept pace with the policy environment researchers now navigate. That gap is the author's responsibility to close, one offer at a time.
