Match is relative to the best journal for this search. Quartile is the journal’s best subfield quartile. Score is the Journal Metrics Score. APC is the indicative fee reported to OpenAlex. Time to acceptance is the PubMed median for 2024 and 2025, shown when enough articles report both dates. A dash means no data. Check fees, scope and timelines on the journal’s site before you submit.
How the matching works
The finder does not use an AI model. It compares the words in your title, abstract and keywords with 4,516 research topics from OpenAlex, each described by a name, a list of keywords and a short description. Words that are rare across topics, such as “zebrafish” or “cathode”, count for more than common ones, and a keyword phrase that appears in your text counts extra.
Each journal is then scored by how much of its recent output, the articles and reviews it published from 2021 to 2024, falls in the topics your text matches. A specialist journal that publishes mostly on your topic ranks above a large journal that publishes a little of everything, and a specific word from your title in a journal’s name, such as “Spine”, adds a small boost.
The “Topics we matched” line shows how your text was read. If it looks wrong, add a few field-specific keywords. Each result also lists the topics that earned it a place.
What the columns mean
- Match
- How well the journal’s output fits your text, relative to the best match for the same search. It is a ranking aid, not a probability of acceptance.
- Quartile
- The journal’s best quartile across the subfields it publishes in, where Q1 is the top 25% of a subfield by Journal Metrics Score. See Q1 vs Q2 journals.
- Score
- The Journal Metrics Score: two-year mean citedness from OpenAlex.
- Access and APC
- Whether the journal is fully open access, and the indicative article processing charge in US dollars reported to OpenAlex. Subscription and hybrid journals let you publish without a fee; the “OA option” is what they charge to make one article open access.
- Time to acceptance
- The median number of days from submission to acceptance in PubMed records from 2024 and 2025, available for 4,188 journals where enough articles report both dates. Where a publisher reports its acceptance rate, it is shown underneath. See journal acceptance times.
Journal finders by publisher
Publisher tools only suggest their own journals. This finder covers every publisher in the catalog, and these pages open it with one publisher selected. Switch the publisher filter to “Any publisher” at any time to compare across publishers.

Before you submit
- Read the aims and scope and a few recent articles of your top three to five matches.
- Check the fee, open access options and author guidelines on the journal’s own site.
- Confirm the indexing the journal claims in the database itself, not only on the journal’s website.
- Rule out predatory journals. See predatory journal lists compared.
- Plan a second and third choice in case of desk rejection, and prepare a cover letter for each.
Frequently asked questions
- How does this journal finder match my paper to journals?
- It compares the words in your title, abstract and keywords with about 4,500 research topics from OpenAlex, each described by its own keywords. It then ranks the 22,270 journals by how much of their recent output (2021 to 2024) falls in the topics your text matches. A journal that publishes mostly on your topic ranks above a large journal that publishes a little of everything.
- Is the journal finder free?
- Yes. Searches are free with no sign-up and no limit beyond a short pause if one address sends many searches in a minute. The matching runs on our server without an AI model, so a search costs nothing to run.
- Does it only suggest journals from one publisher?
- No. Publisher tools such as the Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley and Taylor & Francis finders only suggest that publisher’s own journals. This finder covers every publisher in the catalog, including society and university presses, and has a publisher filter when you want to stay with one.
- Is my abstract stored or used to train AI?
- No. Your text is used only to run the search and is not saved, logged or sent to any other service. No AI model reads it.
- What do quartile, score, APC and time to acceptance mean in the results?
- Quartile is the journal’s best quartile across the subfields it publishes in, where Q1 is the top 25% by Journal Metrics Score. The Journal Metrics Score is the journal’s two-year mean citedness from OpenAlex: citations in the most recent complete year to works from the two prior years, divided by the number of those works. APC is the indicative open access fee in US dollars reported to OpenAlex. Time to acceptance is the median number of days from submission to acceptance in PubMed records from 2024 and 2025, shown only when enough articles report both dates.
- How do I narrow the results to fast or low-cost journals?
- Use the filters above the results. “Time to acceptance” keeps only journals with PubMed timing at or under the number of days you choose. “APC up to” keeps fully open access journals whose listed fee is at or under the cap, plus subscription and hybrid journals, where you can publish without paying. “Open access only” hides subscription journals.
- Why is a journal I expected not in the list?
- The finder ranks journals by the topics they publish in most, so a broad journal can sit below specialist ones, and a journal with very little recent output in OpenAlex may not appear. Add field-specific keywords, or search the journal by name to see its record.
- Should I submit to the top match?
- Use the list as a shortlist, not a decision. Before you submit, read each journal’s aims and scope and recent articles, check its indexing and fees on its own site, and confirm it is not a predatory journal. If you want a ranked shortlist with reasons for each journal, try the paid AI recommendation.
