A useful journal shortlist combines an exact identity check, a current score, a field-relative quartile, and evidence that the journal publishes work like yours. The metric narrows the search; scope and audience determine whether a journal belongs on the list.

1. Begin with plausible journals
Start from journals that match the manuscript's topic, article type, methods, and audience. Search the exact title or ISSN so that similarly named records do not enter the comparison by mistake.
2. Apply the same release to every candidate
Compare candidates using the 2026 Journal Metrics Score from the same release. Do not mix current records with cached scores, values copied from other databases, or records whose source date is unknown.
3. Use quartiles as field context
Journal Metrics quartiles rank journals within each OpenAlex subfield by Journal Metrics Score. Q1 through Q4 therefore describe relative position inside a comparison group, not a universal verdict about quality or suitability.
Read a quartile carefully
- Check the subfield:it should be relevant to the manuscript and the journal's actual scope.
- Check score availability: an unavailable score should not be treated as zero or forced into a ranking.
- Keep ties and boundaries in context: a small score difference near a quartile boundary rarely decides publication fit.
4. Filter by publication fit
Read recent issues and author instructions. Remove journals that do not publish the manuscript's study design, audience, methods, or article type even when their score looks attractive. Then compare indexing, fees, access model, review expectations, and editorial practices.
5. Build a balanced shortlist
Keep a small set of candidates with written reasons for inclusion. A practical list can include an ambitious option, a close fit, and a backup, but every choice should satisfy scope and integrity checks independently of its metric position.
