AMA Citation Generator

Paste a DOI, PubMed ID or article link and copy a reference in AMA style, the format of the AMA Manual of Style, 11th edition. AMA is the numbered style of JAMA and many other medical and health science journals. The format, examples and rules below show what to check before you paste the reference into your manuscript.

Generate a citation

A DOI, PubMed ID, PMC ID, arXiv ID or the link to an article page.

AMA examples

These are the generator’s own results for real articles, copied on November 1, 2026. Paste the same DOI above to reproduce them.

Two authors

Krejcie RV, Morgan DW. Determining Sample Size for Research Activities. Educational and Psychological Measurement. 1970;30(3):607-610. doi:10.1177/001316447003000308

Generated from DOI 10.1177/001316447003000308

More than six authors

Polack FP, Thomas SJ, Kitchin N, et al. Safety and Efficacy of the BNT162b2 mRNA Covid-19 Vaccine. New England Journal of Medicine. 2020;383(27):2603-2615. doi:10.1056/nejmoa2034577

Generated from DOI 10.1056/NEJMoa2034577

The same trial reference edited to AMA rules

Polack FP, Thomas SJ, Kitchin N, et al. Safety and efficacy of the BNT162b2 mRNA Covid-19 vaccine. N Engl J Med. 2020;383(27):2603-2615. doi:10.1056/NEJMoa2034577

The journal name is abbreviated and the title is in sentence case. In your manuscript, set the journal name (N Engl J Med) in italics.

AMA in-text citations

Cite sources with superscript numbers in the order they are first cited, and reuse a number when you cite the same source again. Place the number after periods and commas but before colons and semicolons. Separate several numbers with commas and join a run with a hyphen, with no spaces.

The vaccine was 95% effective against Covid-19 in the pivotal trial.²
Several survey studies used the same sample size table.¹,³⁻⁵

What to check before you submit

  • Number the reference list in citation order, not alphabetically.
  • Copied text loses italics. Set the journal name in italics after you paste the reference.
  • The journal name is printed in full, as the publisher registered it. AMA uses the NLM abbreviation, which you can look up in the NLM Catalog.
  • Articles published online before an issue show the online date in place of volume and pages, as Published online Month Day, Year.
  • When an article has a DOI, AMA uses the DOI instead of a URL.

AMA format for a book

Author AA, Author BB. Title of Book. Edition. Publisher; Year.

The 11th edition no longer asks for the publisher’s location. Book titles are in title case and italics. Books and chapters that have a DOI can be pasted into the generator.

Frequently asked questions

Which edition of AMA style does this generator follow?
It applies the Citation Style Language definition of the AMA Manual of Style, 11th edition, published in 2020. That edition writes the DOI as doi: with no period at the end and leaves the publisher’s location out of book references.
How do I cite more than six authors in AMA style?
List the first three authors followed by et al. When an article has six authors or fewer, list all of them. The generator applies this rule automatically.
How do I write the DOI in an AMA reference?
Write doi: followed by the DOI, with no space after the colon and no period at the end, for example doi:10.1056/NEJMoa2034577. AMA uses the DOI instead of a URL when an article has one.
Can I make an AMA citation from a PubMed ID?
Yes. Paste the PubMed ID or the PubMed link. If the article has a DOI, the reference is built from the DOI record. If it has none, the National Library of Medicine’s citation exporter formats it in AMA style.
What is the difference between AMA and Vancouver style?
Both are numbered styles used in medicine. AMA uses superscript numbers in the text, lists three authors and et al. when there are more than six, italicizes the journal name and gives the full page range. Vancouver lists six authors before et al., does not italicize the journal and shortens the page range.
