DOI to BibTeX Converter
Paste a DOI, PubMed ID, arXiv ID or article link and get a BibTeX entry for your LaTeX bibliography. Copy it or download it as a .bib file. The entry comes from the record the publisher registered with the DOI, laid out one field per line, with the month written as a BibTeX month and page ranges with a double hyphen.
Convert a DOI to BibTeX
What a BibTeX entry contains
@article{Krejcie_1970,
title = {Determining Sample Size for Research Activities},
author = {Krejcie, Robert V. and Morgan, Daryle W.},
journal = {Educational and Psychological Measurement},
volume = {30},
number = {3},
pages = {607--610},
year = {1970},
month = sep,
DOI = {10.1177/001316447003000308}
}- Entry type: @article for a journal article. Conference papers, books and chapters get their own types from the DOI record.
- Citation key: the name you cite with, here Krejcie_1970. Rename it if two entries in your file share one.
- Authors: surname, given names, with the names joined by and.
- Month: a standard BibTeX month (jan to dec), without braces.
- Pages: the range with a double hyphen, which LaTeX prints as an en dash.

Citing the entry in LaTeX
Save the entries in a .bib file next to your document, cite each one by its key, and choose a bibliography style. With biblatex, load the file with \addbibresource and print it with \printbibliography instead.
Sample sizes were read from a published table~\cite{Krejcie_1970}.\bibliographystyle{IEEEtran}
\bibliography{references}What to check before you submit
- BibTeX styles may lowercase words in titles. Wrap names and acronyms in braces to keep their capitals, such as {NumPy} or {BNT162b2}.
- Accented names, such as Stéfan or Türeci, are kept as UTF-8 characters, which current LaTeX handles. Older journal templates may need commands such as {\'e} instead.
- The entry type, title and author list come from the publisher’s record. Check them, especially for conference papers and preprints.
- The entry holds the DOI and a dx.doi.org link. Many bibliography styles print the DOI, so you can delete the url field if both appear.
- An article found only in PubMed, without a DOI, has no BibTeX entry here. Use the Vancouver or AMA page to format it as text.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I get BibTeX from a DOI?
- Paste the DOI, with or without https://doi.org/, and press Convert. The entry is fetched from doi.org, which returns the record the publisher registered. Copy it into your .bib file or download it as a file.
- Can I convert a PubMed ID, arXiv ID or article link to BibTeX?
- Yes, as long as it leads to a DOI. A PubMed ID or PMC ID is looked up to find the article’s DOI, an arXiv ID uses its arXiv DOI, and for an article link the page is read for one. A PubMed article without a DOI has no BibTeX entry here.
- Does the entry work with biblatex and biber?
- Yes. BibTeX and biber read the same .bib format, so the entry works with \bibliography and with \addbibresource. The month is written as a standard month name, which both understand.
- Why is the citation key a surname and year?
- The key comes with the record from doi.org and is made of the first author’s surname and the year, such as Harris_2020. You can rename it to anything without spaces, as long as each key in your .bib file is unique.
- Can I get a RIS file for Zotero, Mendeley or EndNote?
- Yes. After converting, use Download RIS. Most reference managers import RIS files, and Zotero and JabRef also import BibTeX directly.
